Core Values

During past Sustainable Campuses Conferences, anti-oppression training sessions have been provided in order to acknowledge and engage inequities that exist within campus organizations. It is the belief of this year’s conference planners that such issues cannot be approached through a single workshop, and should instead be embedded within each workshop and seminar.

In an effort to further integrate these issues, we have compiled a set of core values that were used during the planning process to inform the programming selection and guide conference content. It is our hope that through this process, the core values will become more prominent and tangible, empowering students to return to their campuses, ask questions, and seek changes to the status quo of student organizations.

Our Core Values:

  • Dialogues over Lectures: In order to engage and empower delegates, we encourage interactive dialogical presentations over lecture-style presentations.
  • Equity and Inclusivity: We encourage presenters to facilitate reflective and inclusive conversations that address barriers to participation in sustainability initiatives. Questions may include: Who is not in the room? On behalf of what groups do we seek to advocate? How does privilege play a role in our work? What steps can we take in our work to address inequities?
  • Positive Outlook: Although sustainability issues may seem overwhelming, we encourage presenters to provide a realistic yet positive outlook during presentations and discussions.
