Starts Wed. May 16th – Volunteers Wanted!

Back for it’s 5^th season, the SFU Pocket Farmers Market is returning on May 16 2012 of bringing fresh and local food to the community. We need friendly, helpful, and engaging volunteer interns to maintain the program throughout the summer, helping with a variety of jobs before, during, and after the weekly market. This is a great opportunity for those who want to increase their involvement in sustainable community development and local food systems.

Main roles include:

Helping the Pocket Market Coordinator with set-up or take-down, merchandising and event coordination
Selling and maintaining Pocket Market products
Promoting the Pocket Market to customers and potential customers
Educating customers on local food and food security issues. (Training is provided.)
Working with Pocket Market Coordinator to provide ideas and facilitate innovative market activities

Skills and Qualifications:

Strong communication and customer service skills
Cash handling experience
Enthusiasm for local food related issues and promoting the Pocket Market
Creative outlook and willingness to give suggestions to improve the Pocket Market
Ability to work and maintain a positive attitude in various weather conditions
Ability to lift equipment and assist with set-up or take-down of the Market

Commitment:

Ability to commit to the following dates and hours (approximately 3 hours per week):
10:00am – 1:00pm on Wednesdays from May 16 – October 31 OR
1:00pm – 4:00pm on Wednesdays from May 16 – October 31 0R

Former Tory Fisheries Minister expresses concern over “gutting” of fisheries act:

Bill C-38 proposes to eliminate federal protection for non-commercial species and waterways. The bill, which is before Parliament this week includes changes to the Environmental Assessment Act, the National Pipeline Act and the Canada Oil and Gas Exploration Act.

Great Summer Job at Famers Markets

Little Qualicum Cheeseworks is looking for an enthusiastic natural food oriented student to manage our midweek summer farmers’ market program in Vancouver, Burnaby, New West and Coquitlam. This entails about 4 markets/week, plus a pick up run. A company van would be provided. It would probably total 30-35 hours/week once markets are at full steam and could go into the fall as long as markets are going (the fall commitment is not necessary, but is helpful). Our person would need reasonable fitness and a secure place for a cold storage unit (provided). Salary approx $2000.00 plus incentive based on $16/hour. The Stoney Creek Environmental Committee’s Great Salmon Send-Off is a celebration of our magnificent Pacific salmon. This community event has been making a splash with Burnaby residents since 1990. Attendance has grown steadily, and now thousands of participants come to see the displays, enjoy the activities and refreshments, and experience the thrill of releasing thousands of salmon into a natural stream. Environment Canada Cuts

According to the Vancouver Sun, “the department’s science and technology branch is facing a $7.5-million reduction in spending following last month’s federal budget. It will eliminate key research and monitoring initiatives as well as some long-standing partnerships that promoted a greener economy.”

And the Pembina Institute responds that “with the proposed changes to the federal environmental review process, Canadians will get weaker, less-informed decision-making, sloppy environmental protection by resource developers, and an increased likelihood of environmental impacts.”
