Aateka Shashank – Internal Chair
Aateka is in her second year st SFU pursuing a degree in International Studies (Environmental Development). She joined the Board of Directors in May 2011 and currently chairs the Climate Change and Local Food Project working groups. She is also a researcher at Carbon Talks, an initiative of the SFU Centre for Dialogue, where she is currently researching the history of Vancouver’s municipal government.
Alex Chen – Secretary
Alex is a 4th year student in Environmental Science. He believes that Sustainable SFU’s work inspires students to take leadership positions and to think critically and objectively in order to develop their community. He believes that a strong student community leads to a better and healthier student body and that as undergraduate student he has an obligation to build and strengthen the student community to become the best it can be.
Carla Hingston – Treasurer
Carla is extremely excited to be apart of a motivating, innovative and engaging organization. She is a fourth year student majoring in International Studies and minoring in Human Geography. Carla is very passionate about the environment and community development, she hopes to explore both her passions more intimately through this experience. Carla got involved through the sustainable campuses conference and is now working really hard as a board member. She looks forward to fostering the growth of sustainable SFU, economically, socially and environmentally with the hopes of building a stronger organization.
Cassandra Ly – Member-at-large
Cassandra is a first-year student at SFU and is excited to discover her true passion around th
e environment, sustainability, and community development. She graduated from Windermere Secondary with strong values for volunteering and advocacy for environmental and social justice initiatives on and off campus. She was the food coordinator for the Sustainable Campuses Conference earlier this year and is currently a volunteer with the Local Food Project. Cassandra is extremely excited to be a apart of the Sustainable SFU Board this year to collaborate with clubs, faculties, and unions to create a stronger, more connected, and sustainable campus.
Chanel Ly – External Chair
Chanel Ly is honoured to return to the Sustainable SFU Board of Directors as an external chair. She is a third-year Environmental Geography and Education student. Sustainable SFU has become an empowering platform for her to learn and build the skills necessary to create a sustainable community within SFU. In the next year, she aims to strengthen community resiliency by building student capacity and establishing stronger relationships with the SFU and broader community. Particularly, Chanel’s inspiration comes from the potential of the local food movement to contribute to climate change mitigation and strengthening our communities. Currently, she is a co-chair of the Local Food Project and is working with a team to build a garden on campus this summer.
Justin is currently in his second year, perusing a major in Sociology major and a minor in Latin America Studies. His commitment towards sustainability is reflected in his drive to live day-to-day in as sustainable means as possible, while working with broader initiatives that promote sustainable practices within a broader social contest. He was first introduced to Sustainable SFU as a programming volunteer with the Sustainable Campus Conference. Justin is also currently volunteering with the Carbon Neutral Project in an effort to build sustainability as a key agenda item throughout SFU and beyond.
